Your Interview Starts Before You Say a Word

Interview advice quote graphic by Adebukola Ajetunmobi that says Your interview starts before you say a single word.

Before you answer a single interview question, the interviewer has already noticed something about you. Your appearance, punctuality and overall presentation can create a first impression before you even introduce yourself.

I once attended a job interview and saw someone dressed in a way that looked more suited for a night out than a job interview.

Heavy makeup.

A shiny outfit.

Very high heels.

Long eyelashes and nails.

Full party energy. 😂

For a moment, I honestly wondered if we were applying for the same role. 😳

It reminded me of something many job seekers underestimate:

Your interview starts before you say a single word.

You don't need expensive clothes to look professional.

But you do need to dress with intention.

Your goal is to look like someone who understands the environment they are entering and has taken the opportunity seriously.

If you're preparing for an interview, here are a few simple things that still matter:

✔️ Dress slightly more formally than the role requires.
✔️ Wear clean, appropriate shoes.
✔️ Keep your hair neat.
✔️ Iron your outfit.
✔️ Smell fresh and presentable.
✔️ Arrive early and composed.
✔️ Avoid anything that could unnecessarily distract from your professionalism.

Of course, different industries have different dress cultures. What works for a creative role may not be the same for a corporate position.

The point is to understand the environment and dress appropriately for it.

You don't have to look expensive.

You just need to look prepared.

Because before your competence is fully assessed, your presence is already being noticed.
