Sometimes, the interview itself isn't the hardest part. It’s what happens when something unexpected goes wrong.
I recently watched a candidate handle an unexpected situation during a virtual interview, and it reminded me why having a Plan B matters.
We were in a virtual interview with a candidate, and everything was going smoothly.
Then NEPA struck. 😂
Suddenly, her screen went dark.
We couldn't see her anymore.
At that moment, things could have easily gone wrong.
But within two minutes, she was back.
Calm. Composed. Ready.
She had switched to her Plan B and continued the interview like nothing happened.
That was impressive.
Because the truth is, things will go wrong.
Your:
Power might go out.
Network might become unstable.
Laptop might suddenly crash.
Phone might develop a problem.
You can't always prevent these things from happening.
But you can prepare for them.
And sometimes, recruiters notice how you respond to unexpected situations just as much as they notice your answers.
So before your next virtual interview, think ahead.
📌 What will you do if the power goes out?
📌 Do you have mobile data as a backup?
📌 Can you switch to your phone if your laptop fails?
📌 Do you have another place you can continue from?
You don't need to prepare for every possible disaster.
Just have a Plan B.
Because opportunities don't always come at convenient times, and sometimes, your ability to stay calm under pressure can make all the difference.
We completed the interview smoothly, and I truly hope she gets selected.
Prepare for the “what ifs.”
When something goes wrong, don't let the problem become the reason you lose the opportunity.
