Your 9–5 Salary Alone May Not Build the Future You Want

Thought-provoking question graphic by Adebukola Ajetunmobi asking if your salary stopped today, how long could you survive.

A 9–5 job is good. It pays your bills and helps you take care of your responsibilities. But if you have bigger dreams, you may need to think beyond your monthly salary.

As a Nigerian, your 9–5 job alone may not give you the life you dream of.

Let that sink in.

For many people, the dream of building a house has been replaced by the daily struggle to pay rent and feed their families.

Don't get me wrong.

A 9–5 job is okay.

It provides income and helps you take care of your responsibilities.

But salary alone may not be enough to build the future you dream about.

That dream of having four or five cars parked in front of your mansion may still be possible, but it could require more than your monthly salary.

We need a Plan B.

Recently, I heard someone complaining that a good loaf of bread now starts at ₦2,000.

The funny thing is, we may look back next year and realize that today's prices were cheap. 😅

So, what can we do?

Start saving!

No matter how much you earn, try to set aside a portion of your income regularly. Start with what you can afford and build the habit.

I once heard about five ladies who started saving together when they were young. They contributed the same amount every month and, after a few years, invested in real estate and other businesses.

Today, they are millionaires!

Their story reminded me of the power of consistency and having a clear financial goal.

If you have a trustworthy circle of friends, you could explore a similar arrangement with clear records and agreed rules.

If not, consider a reliable savings platform that helps you stay disciplined.

Over time, you can explore investments such as real estate, agriculture, stocks or a business. But make sure you understand the risks before committing your money.

You don't have to do everything at once.

Start small. Learn. Plan. Be consistent.

And remember, saving and investing come with different risks. Don't put your emergency money into an investment you don't understand.

The goal is not to quit your job. It's to make sure your salary isn't your only plan for the future.

In today's Nigeria, having additional income sources can give you more options and financial flexibility.

Don't just work to survive today.

Take steps towards the future you want for yourself and your children.

What is your Plan B?
