A job should help you earn a living, not cost you your dignity.
But sometimes, people stay in unhealthy workplaces because they feel they cannot afford to leave.
I recently heard a story that really stayed with me.
A married man I know works as a personal assistant to a woman. His job goes beyond the usual administrative tasks. He drives her, follows her around for errands, and is constantly at her beck and call.
But what shocked me most was hearing that she can be physically violent toward him at times.
Yes, violent.
We often talk about toxic workplaces, difficult bosses, and unfair treatment of employees. But hearing about physical violence against a grown man with a family to care for made me think deeply about what some people quietly endure just to keep their jobs.
Why do people stay?
Sometimes, it isn't because they are comfortable.
Bills still have to be paid.
Children still need to be fed.
Families still depend on them.
Responsibilities don't disappear because a workplace has become unhealthy.
So people stay.
They tolerate things they shouldn't have to tolerate because they feel they have no other option.
Your employees are human beings
Being someone's employer, manager, or boss gives you authority, but it does not give you the right to disrespect or abuse them.
No employee should be physically attacked at work.
No employee should be treated as though they are less than human.
And no one should have to choose between earning a living and protecting their dignity.
Work can be demanding. People can make mistakes. Managers can correct employees and hold them accountable.
But there should always be a line.
Abuse should never be part of the job.
Leadership comes with responsibility
If you manage people or run a business, remember that the people who work for you are human beings first.
They have families, responsibilities, emotions, and limits.
You may have authority over their work, but that authority should come with responsibility.
Create a workplace where people can do their jobs, earn a living, and still feel respected and safe.
Final Thought
A person's need for a salary should never become permission to take away their dignity.
Let's build workplaces where people can earn a living without losing their humanity.
