Here’s aLinkedIn post by Adebukola Ajetunmobi: Your CV got you the interview. Your appearance can decide what happens next.

He had the skills for the job, but he never made it to the interview room. Why? He was stopped at the gate because he showed up wearing palm slippers. I've seen how small details can affect a candidate's chances before an interview even begins. Here's what every job seeker should know.

He never made it to the interview room.

Not because he lacked the skills.

Not because he missed his way.

He was stopped at the gate.

I had already told him to dress professionally, but he showed up wearing palm slippers!

The security man didn't allow him into the premises.

Another candidate almost made the same mistake. Thankfully, I asked him to send me a photo before leaving home.

That's when I noticed the earrings and bushy hair. He quickly fixed them before going for the interview.

These experiences reminded me of something important.

Your interview preparation starts before you enter the interview room.

You may have the right qualifications, relevant experience, and impressive answers, but you also need to prepare for the environment you're walking into.

For an on-site interview, here are a few things to keep in mind.

1. Dress professionally.

Choose an outfit that is neat, clean, and appropriate for the company and role.

2. Pay attention to your appearance.

Make sure your hair, clothes, and overall appearance are tidy. If you're unsure about the company's dress expectations, ask the recruiter for guidance.

3. Wear appropriate shoes.

Avoid palm slippers and overly casual footwear for formal interviews. Choose clean, presentable shoes that suit the outfit and workplace.

4. Prepare before leaving home.

Don't wait until you arrive at the company before checking your appearance. Take a few minutes to look in the mirror and make sure everything is in order.

5. Follow the instructions you're given.

If the recruiter shares a dress code or other interview guidelines, take them seriously. If anything is unclear, ask questions before the interview day.

Of course, dressing professionally doesn't mean you need expensive clothes. You can look neat and presentable with what you already have.

The goal is to show that you've taken the opportunity seriously.

Don't let something you could have prepared for at home become the reason you miss an opportunity before the interview even begins.
