Your CV isn't the only thing people may see when you're looking for opportunities.
Sometimes, your online presence can create an impression before you've had the chance to explain who you are.
A job applicant messaged me recently saying she was looking for a job.
As I was about to reply, I noticed her WhatsApp display picture.
Honestly, it caught me off guard.
It was a very intimate photo, and for a moment, I didn't even know how to respond.
I wasn't trying to judge her as a person.
But it made me think about how much our online presence can influence first impressions.
When you're job hunting, people may come across your WhatsApp profile, LinkedIn page, social media accounts or other public information before they know you personally.
And first impressions can be difficult to change.
Does that mean you shouldn't post personal pictures?
Not necessarily.
Your personal life is your personal life.
But it's worth remembering that not everyone will interpret your online presence the same way you do.
A recruiter may see your profile differently from a friend.
A potential client may see it differently from a family member.
So while you don't have to completely change who you are online, it may be worth asking yourself:
✔️ What impression does my profile create?
✔️ Is my profile picture appropriate for professional conversations?
✔️ What can people easily find about me online?
✔️ Would I be comfortable if a potential employer saw this?
At the same time, recruiters and employers also have a responsibility.
A WhatsApp display picture shouldn't automatically determine whether someone is qualified for a job.
Skills, experience, attitude and performance should still matter.
Your online presence is part of your personal brand, but it should not become the entire story of who you are.
So, while you're preparing your CV and applying for jobs, take a few minutes to review your online presence too.
Sometimes, professionalism starts before the interview.
