Have you ever received a message from a recruiter about a job you never applied for?
Let me explain how that happens.
A member of my community recently messaged me about a job opportunity.
A recruiter had reached out to her on LinkedIn, but she was surprised because she had never applied for the role.
Guess what?
Some recruiters don't publish job adverts and wait for people to apply. They actively search for suitable candidates. This is called headhunting or talent sourcing. 👌
Recruiters use platforms like LinkedIn to find people whose skills, experience, and professional profiles match the roles they're trying to fill.
I've also received messages from hiring managers about opportunities I never applied for.
Why?
Because my profile clearly communicates who I am, what I do, and the value I bring.
This is why your online presence matters.
Gone are the days when job hunting was only about carrying your CV from one company to another. 😂
Today, recruiters can discover you online, review your professional background, and reach out when they believe you could be a good fit for an opportunity.
But here's the thing: if your profile doesn't clearly show your skills and experience, recruiters may struggle to recognise your potential.
So, don't just focus on applying for jobs.
Optimise your LinkedIn headline. Highlight your relevant skills and experience. Share useful content related to your field. Make it easy for people to understand what you do and the opportunities you're open to.
You cannot control whether a recruiter will contact you, but you can improve how you present yourself professionally online.
Don't just position yourself to find opportunities. Position yourself to be found by them, too.
