Don't Let Trust Replace Background Checks When Hiring

Hiring advice by Adebukola Ajetunmobi - Trust is not a background check, verify before you hire

Someone can appear respectful, hardworking, and trustworthy, but that doesn't mean you should skip the proper checks before hiring them. Sometimes, the warning comes after the damage has been done.

I watched a video of a business owner sharing how one of her staff members allegedly stole work equipment worth millions.

According to the business owner, the lady initially appeared respectful, meek, hardworking, and responsible.

She was hired through an agency, and the employer was supposed to conduct a proper background check and collect the details of her guarantors.

But she kept postponing it because the lady was doing her job well. She felt there was nothing to worry about. 🤷‍♀️

Unfortunately, after some months, the lady allegedly stole two pieces of work equipment.

The employer tried calling her repeatedly, but she didn't answer.

That was when the employer realised she didn't have the lady's home address, a relative's contact details, or enough information to help locate her. 🥹

This is why employers should take background checks seriously.

You may trust someone because of how they behave at work, but trust alone is not a substitute for verification.

Before hiring, take reasonable steps to:

  • Verify the candidate's identity.

Check references and previous employment where appropriate.

  • Confirm guarantor details where required.

  • Use a reliable background-check process.

  • Ensure the recruitment agency has completed the agreed checks instead of simply assuming everything has been done.

If an agency is handling your recruitment, clarify who is responsible for the checks and request confirmation that they have been completed.

Of course, a background check cannot guarantee that someone will never do something wrong. However, proper checks can help employers make more informed hiring decisions and reduce avoidable risks.

You don't conduct background checks because you have already judged someone to be dishonest. You conduct them because hiring decisions should be based on more than appearances and assumptions.

Trust people, but put the right processes in place to protect your business.
